1. Taiwan has many small islands and is located about 80 miles from China. Locate Taiwan on a map. What continent is it on? Identify the flag for Taiwan. The Flag has a red background with a blue rectangle to the left with a white sun.

2. The dragon and tiger pagodas are shown on the front of the Taiwan patch. They are located on Lotus Lake in Kaohsiung. It is said you should enter the pagodas through the dragon entrance and exit through the tiger and you will have good luck. Learn more about this pagoda, museum, or other buildings located in Taiwan OR create a drawing OR art project resembling a building or landmark in Taiwan. Some examples include: Chi Ming Pagoda, National Palace Museum, Confucius Temple, Chimei Museum, Jioufen Gold Mine Museum, and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.

3. Ni hao, is hello in Mandarin Chinese. It is the national language in Taiwan. Learn to speak or write a couple words in this language OR learn how to write a word or character in Kanji, Chinese characters.

4. The festivals in Taiwan are very colorful and include parades, fireworks, costumes and food. The most popular celebration is Lunar New Year. Research a festival celebrated in Taiwan OR visit a cultural celebration or re-creation of one of these events OR create a drawing, or art project, or food representing the festival. Some examples of celebrations are Dragon Boat Festival, Lantern Festival, Flying Fish Day, Farmer’s Day, Double 9th Day, Ghost Month, and Harvest Festival.

5. Several different varieties of noodles are ate in Taiwan. The long thin noodles represent good long life. They also eat rice every day and have a large variety of different foods to choose from due to the different people that reside there. Try some foods from Taiwan OR create a recipe of a food prepared there. Some examples are: Garlic and Ginger Chicken, Noodles and Chicken, fried tofu, baked sweet potatoes, pumpkin and pork noodles, egg custard, and Lo Ba.

6. Taiwan’s first settlers were aborigines, also called mountain people. There is a Aboriginal culture center that represents each of the nine tribes in Taiwan. Learn more about one of the tribes such as the name of the tribe, where they primarily live in Taiwan, and what handicraft they are known for. Create a craft that represents one of the tribes such as conch shell necklace or feather painting. Please note, today the tribes of recent generations have moved to creating cultural centers to share their heritages to tourist, schools and other visitors of the country.

7. Traditional clothing in Taiwan is typically worn on special occasions, events, or festivals. The ladies wear a long robe, embroidered hand covers, leg covers, with a conch shell necklaces. Learn more about clothing from Taiwan OR draw a picture of the clothing, OR view clothing, OR try on clothing OR create an accessory or piece of clothing resembling the Taiwan clothing. Examples of clothing are located in the manual.

8. Tea is very important drink in Taiwan. They have tea-tasting competitions and a large variety of teas to drink on a daily basis. The new creation in the past few years is bubble tea. It is a mixture of tea, flavoring, sugar and tapioca balls. It is drank with large straws so you can chew on the tapioca “bubble” balls. Try tea OR have a taste test of tea OR try bubble tea.

9. Taiwan has a variety of traditional toys and games. Some of the games have progressed from other ethnic groups that reside there. Learn about other leisure activities or toys in Taiwan OR play a game they might play in Taiwan. Examples: Fox and Rabbit, Fong Swei, and Growing Rice.

10. The majority of the art in Taiwan is based on the art and literature of China. They have the largest collection of Chinese art in the world at the National Palace Museum. View art or paintings OR create an art project or painting of Taiwan OR make your own wrapping paper or bookmark. ? Refer to the “craft” section for more information.

11. The Taiwanese and Beijing opera have brightly colored costumes, acrobatics, martial arts, and musical instruments. Puppet theater has been popular for over 200 years. They have large puppets, shadow puppets, and hand puppets. Watch a show, listen to opera, create a puppet, make masks, perform a play, OR learn a dance.

12. There are a variety of animals and plants that are unique to the island. Choose three animals that reside in Taiwan to learn more about OR create a craft representing an animal from Taiwan. Examples are: Macaque, Formosan pangolin, goat, Scops owl, and clown wrasse fish.

13. Stories are passed down for generations. Most have a moral at the end. Read a story, OR act out a legend, OR watch a play from a Taiwan legend.
