FREE KIT FOR GROOVY DAYS

1. Far Out! Learn some cool slang from the 60’s and find out what it means. Try to use it in a sentence. Examples include: bummer, groovy, hang ten, dude, cool man, ditch it, or threads.

2. Some of the most popular shows of the 60’s are now syndicated. You can also view them on VHS or DVD. Learn more about one of the main characters and their role on a show OR watch one of these shows, act it out, sing the theme song, dress up or create a skit about one of the shows. Examples are I Dream of Jeannie, The Jetsons, The Addams Family, Green Acres, Gilligans Island, The Flintstones, and Bewitched.

3. What was the rave fashion in the 60’s? There were different styles in the early 60’s and, of course, in the late 60’s. Some of these items include: Miniskirts, Go-go boots, Baby doll dresses, 3/4 length sleeves, bellbottoms, hip huggers and Tye-dye. Design your own groovy outfit from the 60’s, tye-dye a cool shirt or cut out pictures in magazines that may depict the fashion f the 60’s.

4. Get your groove on with some tunes from the 60’s. Listen to some music or dance to the beat. Some
examples include: The Beatles, The Supremes, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Chubby Checker, and the
Woodstock Festival which featured many of the top performers of the late 60’s.

5. Common products found in homes in the 60’s were bean bag Chairs, lava lamps, beaded curtains placed in windows or doorways, shag carpet, and candles. Design a room from the 60’s or explore examples of houses and rooms from that time period.

6. Check out the hairstyles and cosmetics of the 60's. Make-up styles include white or pale lipstick, heavy eyeliner or the natural look. Hairstyles ranged from beehive hair to ironed hair with heavy bangs. Are the hairstyles similar to today? Create a hairstyle from that era of time, roll your hair in curlers, make lip gloss, paint your nails a funky color or give yourself a facial.

7. What type of food or snacks were popular in the 60’s? Kool-aid, TV dinners, candy buttons, necklaces and lipstick, chuckles, Apple Jacks, snack cakes, fritos, rice a roni, shake-n-Bake and hamburgers were all examples. Have a taste test
of different snacks or foods OR design a cool label for one of the 60’s items using slang and colorful displays.

8. Popular games and toys of the 60’s included Barbie, G. I. Joe, twister, cootie, sled, view master, spyrograph, etch a sketch, crayons (box of 48) and color forms. How are toys different today ? Play with a game or toy from the 60’s or create a game similar OR you can play some of the games on the internet.

9. What ever happened to aluminum Christmas trees, icicle tinsel, the milk man, trading stamps, bonnet hairdryers, and 110 cameras? You can still find some of these items today, but it is not the same as it was then. Find out how technology has changed since the 60’s or how an item that was great in the 60’s is different today.

10. Accessorize yourself. Vibrant colors, mod flowers, seed bead necklaces, sunglasses, jean purses and headbands were common accessories during the 60’s. Decorate your jeans or make a piece of jewelry, headband, flower power purse, or any other fun accessory.

11. Put it all together in a cool journal or book format. Place all information you learned about the 60’s such as clothes, slang, TV shows, in book format or display. Add self drawn pictures, clippings from magazines, clip art or website addresses to create a cool project. (Book format and clip art are located in the kit)

12. Peace ! The 60’s was the era of time for standing up for what you believe in. Compile a community service project and help others that are less fortunate than you.
