 HISTORICALLY SPEAKING HONG KONG PATCH PROGRAMcomplete 3 requirements to earn this patch
 
 1. Hong Kong is located in Asia. Find out what the capital is and what the flag looks like. Locate it on a map.
 
  2. Chinese is the official language of China. They also speak English due to the British influence in the 19th century. Learn
 how to count in Chinese, say simple phrases, or have someone that speaks
 Chinese teach you some words.
 
 3. The artists in Hong Kong create detailed ceramic and porcelain crafts sometimes decorated with kanji or with blue designs on
 white pottery. Other handicrafts include: paper crafts, carving, metal
 work, sewing, jewelry making, pottery, or wooden crafts. Create a craft
 or project using a traditional skill, OR representing the Hong Kong, OR
 a holiday craft, OR paint your own pottery.
 
 4. The Hong Kong Cultural Center hosts many wonderful art performances such as: Chinese opera, ballet, orchestra, theatre, and painters.
 Music and dancing are played at festivals and celebrations. There are
 different forms of dances and songs sung at celebrations. Listen to a
 song, sing a song, learn more about the instruments played, try a new
 dance, watch a musical show, or a video with music or dancing.
 
 5. Hong Kong is made up of over 235 islands in various sizes. Many of the islands are inhabited. Learn more about animals or flowers
 of Hong Kong. Create a craft or learn more about what the animals and
 flowers look like. Examples include: Pink dolphin, green turtle, barking
 deer, egret, orchid or heron. You can view them on websites or books about
 Hong Kong.
 
 6. Hong Kong is a culture that is British and Chinese infused. You can see double decker buses with Chinese symbols on them and crown
 symbols around the towns. Create a craft, an art project, or accessory
 that reminds you of Hong Kong.
 
 7. Hong Kong has many traditional toys and games. They have board games and other games that children enjoy playing. Play a game or
 sport that they enjoy in Hong Kong. Examples are: Mah-jongg, weiqi [way-chee],
 Hawk and Hen, and Chung Tou ten Tou.
 
 8. The holidays in Hong Kong follow the Chinese calendar. Lunar or Chinese New Year is the most important festival of the year.
 Some other examples include: Mid– Autumn Festival, Tin Hau’s Birthday,
 Ching Ming Festival, Bun Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Spring Lantern
 Festival. Visit a cultural celebration or recreation of one of these events
 OR learn why they celebrated the holiday OR create a drawing, or art project,
 such as lanterns, fans, OR make food related to a Hong Kong celebration.
 
  9. A typical meal in Hong Kong begins with a cup of tea. Three to four different dishes are served with meat and vegetables, plus
 a soup. Dim Sum is served in Hong Kong restaurants and they enjoy food
 that is served on carts that come to your table. Each item you choose
 from the cart is a bite sized portion so you can try different types of
 food. Visit a dim sum restaurant OR make a recipe OR have a taste test
 of food that is eaten in Hong Kong.  Refer to the Recipe Section located
 in the back of the manual.
 
 10. The opera show in Hong Kong is taken from folk legends and fairy tales. Stories have been passed down from generation to generation.
 Read a story OR watch a play OR act out a skit that represents Hong Kong.
 
 11. Hong Kong is known for their paintings on silk or paper. Create a craft or painting using paper or paint. Examples are: Paper fans,
 hair accessory, or calligraphy banner. ? Refer to the Craft Section located
 in the back of this manual.
 
 12. Hong Kong traditional clothing for festivals of special occasions are made of silk with floral or decorative designs. The woman
 wear a knee-length dress (ao) like the men’s changshan. Under the ao are
 loose, baggy pants (ku). For accessories, women usually wear simple jade
 necklaces, an embroidered headband, Chinese slippers, and sometimes ankle
 covers out of the leftover beautiful material. Color our paper dolls OR

 13. During the Lunar New Year, they place red envelopes with Chinese characters and gold dragons on them on a cherry blossom tree.
 Create a red envelope, OR learn what about your Chinese zodiac symbol,
