1. Totally Awesome! Learn some cool slang from the 80’s and find out what it means. Try to use it in a sentence. Examples include: fave, sweet, yikes, B.F.F., gag me with a spoon, gnarly, have a cow, or bounce.

2. Some of the most popular shows of the 80’s have been released on DVD or can be watched on late night TV. Learn more about one of the main characters and their role on a show OR watch one of these shows, act it out, sing the theme song, dress up or create a skit about one of the shows. Examples are Knight Rider, Dallas, The Dukes of Hazzard, MacGyver, The Love Boat, Alf, and 21 Jump Street.

3. What was the fashion like in the 80’s? There were different styles in the early 80’s and, of course, in the late 80’s. Some of these items include: Prairie skirts, workout fashion, monogrammed sweaters, oxford shirts, polo shirts, Hawaiian prints, ruffled blouses with high collars, velour sweaters, blazers, and ski vests. Design your own outfit from the 80’s on paper or using your own clothing OR cut out pictures in magazines that may depict the fashion guide of the 80’s.

4. Move to the beat, watch a music video, or listen to some fave tunes from the 80’s. Some examples include: Michael Jackson, Blondie, Queen, Diana Ross, J. Geils Band, Billy Idol, Kool and the Gang, Styx and the Go’s Go’s.

5. Common products found in homes in the 80’s were futons, oriental themes, comforters and bed ruffles, microwave ovens, and VCR’s. Design a room from the 80’s or explore examples of houses and rooms from that time period.

6. The hairstyles and makeup styles of the 80’s were big, bold, and bright. Make-up styles included colored mascara, heavy eyeliner, or blue and green eye shadow. Hair styles ranged from perms to Mohawks or French braids. Are the hairstyles similar of today? Create a hairstyle from that era of time, braid or crimp your hair, experiment with makeup, paint your nails neon colors or give yourself a facial.

7. What type of food or snacks were popular in the 80’s? Examples include: Frozen waffles or pizza, fun-dip candy®, gummies, microwavable food and popcorn, New Coke®, banana spilt, orange Julius, pop tarts®, Pixi Sticks®, Slim Jim®, Tang®, Zero bar®, Twinkie®, mac and cheese in a box. Have a taste testing of different snacks or foods OR Design a cool label for one of the 80’s items using slang and colorful displays.

8. Popular games and toys of the 80’s included Care Bears®, My Little Pony®, Hungry Hungry Hippo®, Smurf®, Transformers®, Strawberry Shortcake®, Barbie®, Jem®, Cabbage Patch Kids®, Rubic Cube®, roller blades, Uno®, Electronic Atari® Video Game, Pac- Man®, and Rainbow Brite®. How are toys different today ? Play with a game or toy from the 80’s or create a game OR play a similar games on the internet.

9. Accessorize yourself. Neon colors, metallic belts and shoes, jelly shoes, leg warmers, pearl necklace, bangle bracelets, tights, scrunchies, banana clips, fingerless gloves, sunglasses, were common accessories during the 80’s. Decorate a t-shirt, make a piece of jewelry, headband, scrunchie, OR dress up in items from the 80’s.

10. Put it all together in a cool journal or book format. Place all information you learned about the 80’s such as clothes, slang, TV shows, in book format or display. Add self drawn pictures, clippings from magazines, clip art or website addresses to create a cool project. (Book format and clip art are located in the kit)

11. A variety of movies were released in the 80’s. Watch a movie from the 80’s or listen to the soundtrack. Examples of movies are: E.T., Flashdance, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, Caddyshack, The Goonies, The Princess Bride, and Ghostbusters.

12. Every decade is filled with a variety of historical events. Choose one event to learn more about that happened in the 80’s. Examples: Mount St. Helens erupts, presidential election, first woman appointed to the Supreme Court, or the first official space shuttle flight.
