1. Locate Korea on a map. What continent is it on? What is the capital city of North Korea and South Korea? Learn about the language in Korea; say “Hello“ or “Goodbye“ in the native language. Identify the flag for South or North Korea.

2. One of Korea’s recognizable landmarks is the Kyongbok Palace, also known as the palace of shining Happiness. Learn more about this palace or other buildings located in Korea. Some examples include: Folklore Museum, Ch’angdok Palace, or cathedrals. For extra, create a diorama or model of one of the buildings located in Korea.

3. The Korean language was written using the Chinese characters. In 1446, a new alphabet was created called the hangul. Try writing a word using the Korean alphabet or learn a few words in a Korean dialect.

4. In Korea, kites are not just for children. One of the popular events is kite fighting, maneuvering your kites so they cut the other persons string. Research a festival celebrated in Korea. Visit a cultural celebration or re-creation of one of these events OR learn why they celebrated the holiday. For extra fun, you can create a drawing, or art project, or food representing the festival. Some examples of celebrations are the mask festival, feast of lanterns, Tan O Day, or Harvest Festival.

5. Seafood is readily available in Korea to it’s land being surrounded by water. Rice is the basis of most Korean meals. Find out other foods they make or enjoy. Try some Korean food or research more about the ingredients in the foods prepared there. Some examples are: kimchi, bulgogi, kalbi, koala cookies, Prez, and chocolate crackers.

6. The traditional Korean clothing is called a hanbok. It is a short jacket and a high waisted full skirt for women and a jacket with loose pants for men. Draw a picture of the clothing, view clothing, try on clothing or create an accessory or piece of clothing resembling the Korean clothing. Examples of clothing are located in the manual.

7. When a child is born in Korea, the family can not have visitors for 100 days. After 100 days, a small feast is prepared and the child is named. 8. Korea has many traditional toys and games. One of the popular sports practiced in Korea is tae kwon do and dojo. Some other games or sports are archery, chess, see saw, Hoola, rummy. 9. The Korean fan dance and performing with masks are traditional entertainment in Korea. Do one of the following: Create your own song, sing a traditional song, dance with fans, make masks and perform a play, read a traditional story or myth from the Korean culture.

10. There are a variety of animals and plants in Korea due to the diverse land of forest and beaches. Choose three animals that reside in Korea to learn more about. Examples are: leopard, tiger, goat, lynx, bear, goshawk and mandarin duck.

11. The kayagum is a popular instrument played in Korea. Try to sing a Korean song, dance to music, or learn more about a musical instrument played in Korea. Examples include: Tongso (Korean Flute), Yanggum (Western harp), the Taegum , (flute), or the p’iri (oboe).
