The official language is considered to be Luxembourgish, however the government speaks both French and German too. Most citizens speak all three languages because schools speak all three, and the government tends to speak predominantly French. German is most used in newspapers. Learn some words or slang that is spoken in Luxembourg. 3. The biggest festival in Luxembourg is Carnival. This is the celebration before Lent, the period before the Christian holiday, Easter. There are colorful parades where people dress in traditional or colorful dress and throw candy out to onlookers. The Sunday after Carnival is Bonfire Day, where fires are lit on the hillsides at night. Other celebrations include May Day on May first, National Day on June 23rd, and Pretzel Sunday, a day of gift giving. Then, in 963, the count of Ardennes, named Siegfried, acquired a castle and called it Lucilinburhuc, meaning "little fortress". It was from this that Luxembourg became a country.
