1.  New Zealand is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. It has two main islands; the North and the South Island. Centuries ago, Polynesians settled in New Zealand, creating a distinctive Maori Culture. In 1840, the British and the Maori signed a treaty that made New Zealand a colony of the British Empire. Locate New Zealand on a map and its Capital. Identify it’s flag. The capital city is Wellington. New Zealand’s flag is Red, White and Blue.

2. English is the official language of New Zealand with about 98% of the country being speakers. In 1987, Maori was recognized as an official language. Today, it has few native speakers.  Choose a language to learn how to speak a phrase or some words.

3. Since New Zealand is an Island Nation, their food is largely land and seafood based. It is heavily influenced by Australian, British and Maori Cuisine.  Food is based on seasonal and local ingredients. A dish that is very popular all throughout New Zealand is Pavlova, a meringue based desert. Try some foods from New Zealand or make your own recipe from traditional New Zealand recipes.

4. New Zealand celebrates major holidays such as Christian, Muslim and Jewish Holidays. Days specific to New Zealand’s culture are Waitangi Day and Queens Day. There are also many traditional festivals in New Zealand that reflect the Maori Culture. Some examples include the Kawhia Kai Festival, Te Ra o Waitangi and the international Kai festival.   Visit a cultural celebration or re-creation of a holiday event OR learn the background of the celebrated holiday or festival. You may also create a drawing or art project, or prepare a food. ? Refer to the Festivals and Holidays section in the back of this manual.

5. Haka is a traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the Maori people of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment. Watch a dance or learn more information about a dance and try your own moves.

6. Legends and stories are passed down for many years through the generations. Most of the legends are based on actual events.  The stories are  sometimes about people, animals or spirits. In New Zealand, traditional legends and myths are based on the Maori culture. Read a story, legend, OR listen to a legend or play.

7. The Maori culture is rich in language, mythology, food, crafts, and performing arts. They arrived in New Zealand some time before 1300CE where they formed a tribal society. Today, the Maori people make up about 15% of the population of New Zealand, and about 4% of those speak the language. Learn more about this culture through the information given in this manual.  

8. New Zealand is an Island nation, consisting of two main islands; the North and South Island. It is also made up of a number of small islands, some of which are inhabited. The South Island is characterized by the Southern Alps, a large mountain range. The Northern island is characterized by its Volcanoes, some of which are very active. Both islands are rich in Marine resources. Complete a beach activity OR learn about [3] marine life animals OR Learn about Volcanoes.

9. Maori arts and crafts include weaving, carving and cultural performance. Create a craft or project using a traditional a skill OR representing New Zealand, OR observe someone creating a handicraft OR view them on the internet or books.

10. Traditional clothing for men and women in New Zealand reflect the island nation culture of their ancestors. The Maori tribal dress includes two main types of garments: a knee length flax kilt-like skirt held up by a belt and a rectangular garment worn over the shoulders. Mens belts (tatua) are generally more ornate than the women’s belts (tu). Draw a picture of the clothing, dress up in a New Zeland themed costumes, create an accessory, complete our paperdolls OR view traditional clothing through books or the internet or our country manual.
