SPEAKING NORWAY PATCH PROGRAM 1. Norway receives it nickname Norge by being the northernmost country in Europe. Locate Norway on a map and its Capital. Identify Norway's flag and currency. 2. Norwegians eat four meals a day. The main mean is Middag, a hot meal around 5 PM. From smorbrod, open face sandwiches, to koldt bord, buffet. Norway is known for its unique variety of food. Try some foods from Norway or make a recipe from a Norwegian cookbook or website. 3. Most of the festivals the Norwegians wear their traditional bunad. There are many public holidays and festivals in Norway. Some examples of holidays and festivals include: Mid Summer's Day, Constitution Day, Holmenkollen, Ski Festival, Whitsuntide Monday, Easter, and Christmas Day. Visit a cultural celebration or re-creation of a holiday event OR learn the background of the celebrated holiday or festival. You may also create a drawing or art project, or prepare a food. 4. Folktales are an important part of Norwegian culture. The stories often have a moral and are passed down for many years. Norway is a land of glaciers, waterfalls, mountains, islands, seas and sea inlets called fjords. Learn more about the terrain, animals, and plants of Norway. Identify flowers and animals found in Norway by having a scavenger hunt in websites, or books about Norway. 6. There are a large number of languages spoken in Norway. The most widely spoken is Norwegian. Some of the other languages that are spoken are Finnish, Kven, Romani, and Sami. Learn some common words in one of Norway's languages or write some common phrases. 7. Skiing originated and became the most popular sport in Norway. In addition, they invented Alpine skiing and skiing for the blind. Some other sports that are enjoyed are skating, dogsledding, soccer [football], fly fishing, swimming, sailing, and handball. Learn more about an outdoor activity or choose one to enjoy. 8. Norwegian gatherings and festivals are almost always full of music and dancing. There are many different forms of folk dances and songs sung at celebrations. Listen to a song, learn more about the instruments played, try to dance Norwegian style, watch a musical show, or play an instrument such as a hardingfele, (fiddle); willow flute; or violin. Examples: joik, (song from Sami); lur (bronze horn); and polka (dance). 9. In the early history of Norway the Viking culture was in existence. They were skilled craftspeople and traders, with some having a reputation of being pirates. They sailed to many parts of the world in lightweight wooden boats. Create a craft representing the Vikings or their boats. 10. In each region of Norway, people have a national costume, bunad (boo-nahd), that they wear on holidays and special occasions. Draw a picture of the clothing, dress up in a Norwegian costumes, create and accessory, or view traditional clothing through books or the internet. 11. Norwegians are known all across the world for their beautiful paintings and decorative objects called rose paintings, rosemaling. Their pictures depict bright colors, curvy strokes, and flowers. Other handicrafts include: weaving, carving, knitting, sewing, jewelry making, pottery, sculpting, or artistic crafts depicting the traditional patterns. Create a craft or project using a traditional a Norwegian skill OR representing the Norway OR a holiday craft. 12. Norway's most famous architecture is the stave churches they were built over 1,000 years ago. Dragons, vines, leaves, and other intrigue designs carved into the building. Research other landmarks in Norway. Find out where they are located and what they represent OR how it was created. Examples are: Nidaros Cathedral, Viking Ship Museum, Folk Museum, National Gallery, National Theater, Royal Palace, and Gamie Aker Kirke. 13. Desserts, hot chocolate, truffles, and candy bars, Norway's most famous chocolate factory named Freia. Some of their creations include chocolate dipped pretzels, raisins, and wafers; chocolates with hazelnuts, orange flavoring, fillings and much more. The reindeer, arctic fox, snowy owl and wolves are only a few of the animals that are seen in Norway. Did you know that some animals can camouflage to blend into the whiteness of the arctic? The northern part of Norway is often called the "Land of the Midnight Sun" due to the sky being lit 24 hours a day in the summer. The Sami people live in the northern part of Norway and have herds of
domestic reindeer. The traditional clothing is called gakt. It has brightly
colored cloth and each area has a different color. Children wear large
