1.Spain located in the continent of Europe. It has a variety of terrains from the mountains to the beaches. Locate Spain on a world map. What is the capital city? Name one of the surrounding countries.

2. About 600 years ago Spain was a part of the Roman Empire. In 1492, Spain became one country and is now ruled by a king with a government voted on by the people. What does the flag look like? What monetary unit do they use?

3. Spain’s monuments, art, and architecture reflects their ancient history and cultural background. They have more than 10,000 castles. Choose a building, monument, etc. to learn more about. Examples include: The Prado Museum, Fuente de Cibeles, Puerta de Alcala, and the Catherdral of Santigao de Campostela.

4. There are a variety of holidays and festivals in Spain. Some examples include: Christmas, San Fermin, May Day, Three Wise Men, Easter, and Feria Del Abril. Have you own celebration representing one of these holiday events and learn the meaning of the event or attend a festive Spanish event. You may also create a drawing, art project, or prepare a food served at the event.

5. Traditional Spain foods include seafood, smoked sausages, rice, bread, and beans, depending on the region that you are depicting. The history of their country contributed to the variety of food served today. Try a typical Spanish food or recipe representing their country’s heritage. Some examples include paella, gazpacho, churro, and tapa.

6. The people that live in Spain are called Spaniards. Due to Spain being many different countries some parts still have their own languages and customs. Primarily the language spoken in Spain is Spanish. Learn how to recite a phrase in Spanish or count to ten.

7. Bullfighting has been performed in Spain for hundreds of years. They also enjoy a variety of other outdoor sports and games. Some of the most popular ones are soccer, pelota vasca, golf, yachting, tennis, bicycling, swimming, running, and football. Learn more about an outdoor activity or choose one to enjoy.

8. The traditional clothing in Spain is mainly worn for dances or special occasions. Though some groups in Spain wear traditional clothing daily in order to keep their customs alive in their region. The clothing ranges from berets to mantillas. Choose a type of clothing to learn more about. Draw a picture or make a paper doll from the Spain manual.

9. The art of music and dance are very important to their culture. Though the Flamenco dance was derived from the gypsy heritage is enjoyed throughout Spain today. Sing or Dance to a Spanish song, learn more about their instruments, listen to their music or watch a dance on TV etc.

10. People that reside in different regions of Spain have different cultures and customs. Choose one of the groups of people to learn more about. Where are they located? What language do they speak? Examples are: The Catalans, Valencians, Basques, Andalusians, Castilians, Galicians, Gypsies, and the Extremadura and Asturias. In addition, you may create an art project or color a paper doll depicting their clothing.

11.The great Spanish artists have contributed to the beauty of the homes and buildings of the world. Each artist has their own style of painting or creating. Learn more about one of the artists and their style. In addition, you may wish to create an artistic design of a landmark or free expression of your own creation. Examples of artists are: El Greco, Franciso Goya, Pablo Picasso, Diego Velazquez, or Salvador Dali.

12. Spanish children and adults enjoy a variety of traditional games. Learn about games or toys played OR play a game from Spain. Examples include: Tute, the clock, race with eggs, the three ships, and colorful spider.

13. Years ago creating lace was a large industry for Spain. Learn about other traditional arts and crafts that are practiced in Spain. Try to complete a project with a group or on your own representing one of them. Some examples include: basket weaving, needlework, embroidery, sewing, pottery, and leatherwork. Visit a paint your own pottery place and create your own item.

14. In 1492, Spain sent Christopher Columbus to explore the new world. He discovered islands in the Caribbean Sea. Eventually Spain began to capture portions of Central America, North America, and South America. Choose one area to learn more about such as the name of the country or state OR complete one of our kits or manuals depicting these areas. Is it still owned by Spain? Does the culture have a Spanish influence? If so what? Examples of areas include: Jamaica, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, and Louisiana.
