SPEAKING TURKEY PATCH PROGRAM 1. Turkey is partly in Europe and Asia. The regions are separated by Bosporus Strait. What does the flag and country outline look like? What is the capital? 2. The Turkish language is spoken in Turkey. Learn how to count, a phrase or a few words in the Turkish language. 3. There are over 1,500 varieties of Turkish folk dances. Folk festivals have their own folk dances and costumes. Watch a dance or learn more information about a dance and try your own moves. Examples: Spoon Dance, Sword and Shield Dance of Bursa, Halay, Zeybek, and Honon Dance. 4. On the first day of school, some children bring a sweet treat called a lokma, a sweet doughnut, to their teacher. Food can vary from place to place in Turkey. It is said that fortune telling can be told at the end of a drink in Turkey. Try a recipe, food, or drink from Turkey. Examples include: baklava (dessert), krem, patlican, manti, hors d’oeuvres, meze, sigara boregi,(cheese pastry), imam bayildi (eggplant dish), kebabs, kofta (meatballs), bulguak, pilavi, ayran (yogurt drink), Turkish coffee, and cay (tea). 5. Turkey has a variety of festivals. One of the popular events is the international Istanbul Puppet Festival. Learn about festivals in Turkey, go to a festival, participate in one, OR complete a craft that represents a festival. Examples include: Seker Bayrami, Mevlana Festival, Kurdish New Year, Youth Day, Kirkpinas Festival, Abraham’s Holiday, The Night of Power, National Children’s Day Festival, Butterfly Valley Breeding Season, Bursa Book Fair, and Izmir Animal Fair. 6. Legends and stories have been passed down for many years in Turkish culture. Most of the legends are based on actual events. Read a story, legend, or saying from Turkey, get your fortune told, or learn the meaning of a Turkish proverb. 7. A relaxing steam bath called a haman is popular is Turkey. Find out more about hamans or learn about a technique that can make you relax. Examples include: taking a bubble bath, going to the spa, getting a pedicure, reading a book, watching a movie or spending time with friends. 8. Istanbul is the city that forms the gateway between the Asia part of Turkey and Europe area. Located on the patch is the landmark in Istanbul called the Hagia Sophia. Research a landmark, museum, unique places, OR draw a picture of one. Examples are: Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Egyptian Spice Market, Cappaducia Museum, or the Grand Bazaar. 9. Turkey has a large variety of animals due to the terrain. There are over 80,000 different species of animals, a large portion are birds. Some of their animals only live in Turkey such as the Anatolia leopard. Research three [3] different animals that reside in Turkey such as their coloring and habitat. Examples include: Loggerhead turtle, monk seal, van cat, horse, partridge, sheep, hyena, and boar. 10. Many of Turkey’s artistic handicrafts are sold in the market and all homemade. They are famous for their woven rugs created in various sizes, designs, and colors. Other handicrafts include: weaving, carving, leatherwork, sewing, jewelry making, pottery, or sculpting. Create a craft or project using a traditional a Turkish skill OR representing the Turkey OR design a piece of furniture, OR observe someone making one OR you can also create your own market and sell items. 11. There is a large variety of music performed and played in Turkey from Opera to folk music. They have festivals, concerts, and theater shows that incorporate their music. Sing a song from Turkey OR listen to music or a song OR perform a skit OR create a puppet OR learn about their musical instruments OR watch a play. 12. Traditional clothing in Turkey is worn on festival days or during folkdances. The dress for women is striped or flowered baggy pants, long sleeve white blouse and sash. Men wear baggy pants tthat end at the knee, striped long sleeve shirt, with a headdress on their head. Draw a picture of the clothing, dress up in a Turkish theme costumes, create and accessory, or view traditional clothing through books or the internet or our country manual. 13. There are a variety of games that played in Turkey by children. Learn a traditional game OR play a game that symbolizes Turkey OR play a game in our manual. Some examples include: Mangala, Fox and Hen, and Okey. 14. Football is the most popular sport in Turkey. Some other sports that are enjoyed are table tennis, scuba diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, skiing, fencing, and swimming. Learn more about an outdoor activity or choose one to enjoy OR make a collage of sports in Turkey OR draw a picture. 15. Filigree art is used to create beautiful bracelets, jewelry boxes, and other pieces of jewelry. Create a piece of jewelry, accessory, or jewelry box. Some examples include a beaded bracelet, necklace with a pendant, rings, OR wooden engraved jewelry boxes can be found at craft stores. 16. In Turkey they decorate their hands and feet before their wedding. They also decorate their feet when they are attending folk events or festivals.
