Festivals in Uganda mainly take place in the capital city, Kampala. Festivals and holidays are enjoyed by everyone as a way to break off from daily life and enjoy family time. On March 8, Ugandans celebrate International Women's Day. This day celebrates and inspires women all around the country and the globe. The main staples in Ugandan dishes are plantains, cassavas, sweet potatoes, millet, sorghum, corn, beans, and peanuts. Drums are the main musical instrument in music, and are usually handmade. In some rural areas, drums are still used as a means of communication. Each ethnic group in Uganda has their own dance rituals. The bwola dance is part of the Acholi tribe, and is preformed before the chief. Groups of hunter-gatherers roamed North Africa about 1 million years ago, and left behind a history that is so rich and fabulous, that no other area of the world can claim. Early humans were known as Neanderthals. After, modern humans evolved and were considered hunter-gatherers, meaning they hunted and gathered their food instead of growing it. There is a lot of wildlife in Uganda due to its beautiful and lush green environment. Some examples of animals include: gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, rhinoceroses, antelope, hundreds of bird species, giraffes, and lions! Most of these animals are found in National Parks, where they can be protected. There is a vast amount of plant life in Uganda due to the many climates and habitats. Handicrafts in Uganda include: gourds (used to serve food and drink), basket weaving, pottery, and fabric making. Gourds are grown naturally in a variety of shapes, so they are used for a variety of ways to serve food items. Basket weaving is a traditional craft, and are often made to be very colorful and ornate. Fabrics come in bold patterns and pottery is used for the same purpose as gourds. The national dress of Uganda for women is called the basuuti, a long, brightly colored dress made of printed fabric. A belt called a kitambaala holds it in place. Men's traditional clothing includes a long white robe called a kanzu, which is sometimes worn under a jacket. These traditional outfits are worn in daily life by some people still, however are almost always worn during traditional ceremonies.
