1. Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world. Who discovered Brazil
and how did it get its name? What continent is it located on? Identify the capital, flag and currency they use. Identify the symbols on the patch.

2. The language in Brazil is Brazilian Portuguese. It is a language that
is similar to Spanish, but Brazilians appreciate it if you know the difference.
Try to form a phrase or count in this language.

3. The Brazilian Rainforest is a large ecosystem and covers most of northern
Brazil. The Amazon River, the world’s largest river system, runs through
it. How many feet a year does it rain in the forest? What is an ecosystem?
What are the different layers of the Rainforest called? How long is the
Amazon River ? For extra credit create a picture or display of the Rainforest.

4. Over 3,000 species of trees, and 7,000 species of insects and animals can be found in the Amazon Rain Forest. Choose 3 species to learn more
about. Such as: rubber trees, orchids, toucans, sloths or leaf cutter
ladies.

5. There is a large variety of people in Brazil including Europeans, Africans,
Asians, and Indians. This creates a melting pot of diverse foods. Some
of the foods have amazon legends explaining their existence. Learn more
about the foods or recipes. Examples: Tropical fruit salad, Brazilian
chocolate desserts, guarana berry drink or ham and pineapple sandwiches.

6. Music and Dance are very important in Brazil. The Samba is a lively dance that is sometimes complimented with musical instruments. Try to sing a popular song, dance to Brazilian music like the samba, or make or play an instrument. Examples include: drum, tambourine, shaker, or clappers.

7. Futebol, or soccer, is the most important sport in Brazil. Not only do they play it professionally, but most people enjoy playing for fun. Other enjoyable
sports in Brazil include skating, bicycling, volleyball, and jogging.
Learn more about one of these sports, play one or watch one.

8. Prepare for four days of singing, dancing, feasting and masquerading at
a Brazilian Carnival. Create a simulated Brazilian celebration, visit
a cultural event, or create a project or food representing one of their
festivals or holidays. Examples: Christmas, New Years, and Goddess of
the Sea.

9. Brazil is more commonly known for its beaches and Rainforests. Did you
know that there is a large area in Brazil that has a wilderness atmosphere?
Brazil is located below the equator so it’s seasons are unlike those of
North America. Research the seasonal patterns and a natural landmark or
terrain. Such as: Iguacu Falls, Guanabara Bay, Rio De Janeiro city, Neblina
Mountains, grassland, swampland, farmland, or coastal land. For extra
credit: create a terrain map of Brazil.

10. Brazil has many historic buildings and landmarks. Research a landmark
or a building, such as churches, mansions, the Statue Of Christ, or the
Imperial Palace.

11. Brazil declared its independence in 1822 when Pedro I was named Emperor of Brazil. In 1831, Pedro II began his rule. How old was he? How long
did he reign? Name one improvement he made to Brazil. What date did Brazil
declare a republic?

12. Rock paintings are among the most traditional of the Brazilian crafts.
Brazil is considered the jewel capital of the world. It supplies 90% of
the world’s gemstones. Other resources or crafts they are known for are:
wood carving, sculpting, ceramics, basket ware and jewelry making. Create
a craft or project using a traditional Brazilian skill.

13. The traditional clothing in Brazil is mainly worn for special occasions,
especially at the Carnival. The culture in Brazil involves many racial
and ethnic groups. Therefore many versions of traditional clothing are
worn. Some common clothing are long floral patterned cotton skirts worn
with a white blouse. Men typically wear black pants and a long sleeve
shirt with boots. Draw a picture of the clothing, dress up in Brazilian
costumes, or view traditional clothing through books or the internet.
