    HISTORICALLY SPEAKING IVORY COAST PATCH PROGRAM
    complete 3 requirements to earn this patch

    1. The French sailors who traded Ivory along the coast
    in the 15th century gave Ivory Coast their name. Locate Ivory Coast on
    a map and its Capital. Identify it’s flag. The capital city is Yamoussoukro.
    Ivory Coast’s flag is orange, white, and green striped.

    2. There are over sixty different ethnic groups in Ivory
    Coast. Each group has it’s own language. Most usually speak two different
    languages their native language and the Dyula language. They use the Dyula
    language at the market when they are trading goods. Another language spoken
    in some schools is French. Choose a language to learn how to speak a phrase
    or some words.

    3. Chicken, vegetables, rice, and fish are the most popular
    cooked foods in the Ivory Coast. The typically cook their food spicy with
    peppery sauce. The national dish is foutou, dough with mashed plantains
    or yams dipped in a spicy sauce. Try some foods from Ivory Coast or make
    a recipe from Ivory Coast.

    4 Due to the variety of ethnic groups in the Ivory Coast,
    each area usually has their own festivals and celebrations. There are
    some holidays and festivals that are celebrated by all residents. Some
    examples of holidays and festivals include: Festival of Masks, Harmattan
    Winds Festival, Festival of Abissa, Yam Festival, Eid al-Fitr, Independence
    Day, and Ramadan. Visit a cultural celebration or re-creation of a holiday
    event OR learn the background of the celebrated holiday or festival. You
    may also create a drawing or art project, or prepare a food.

    5. A large variety of the dances are associated with
    special events and festivals. Some of the dances are performed in grass
    skirts and special headdresses. They can tell stories or serve as entertainment
    for the event. Watch a dance or learn more information about a dance and
    try your own moves. Examples: Senufo N’Goron, Panther and Korutouba and
    Kouroubissi dances.

    6. Legends and stories are passed down for many years
    through the generations. Most of the legends are based on actual events.
    The stories are sometimes about people, animals or spirits. Read a story,
    legend, OR listen to a legend or play.

    7. The area of Ivory Coast is made up of many different
    groups of people many of them being indigenous to the area. Choose one
    to learn more about. Such as what part of the country do they reside in,
    what language is primarily spoken, and handicrafts or crops they produce
    for income. Examples: Kru, lobi, kulango, Dioula, dan, Yacouba, Senufo,
    Agni, and Baule.

    8. Many islands are on the coast of the 630 mile Ivory
    Coast Pacific coast. The most popular island is the Isla del Coco. It
    has waterfalls, scuba diving, snorkeling and a National Park. Complete
    a beach activity OR learn about [3] marine life animals OR complete a
    craft.

    9. Many of Ivory Coast’s artistic handicrafts are sold
    to tourist. They are known for decorated gourds, brightly painted wooden
    bowls and trays, woven baskets, mats, and leather goods. Create a craft
    or project using a traditional a skill OR representing Ivory Coast, OR
    observe someone creating a handicraft OR view them on the internet or
    books.

    10. The traditional korhogo cloth has an artistic design
    hand painted on it by the Senufo tribe. Create a design on paper or cloth
    OR design your own wrap around skirt with Ivory Coast symbols OR watch
    a video on how the cloth is created or designed OR find out the meaning
    on some of the designs.

    11. Traditional clothing for women in Ivory Coast is
    a pagne (PAHN-yuh) and shirt. It is a piece of cloth in an African colorful
    print.  It is wrapped around their waist and they wear something under
    it. On special occasions they wear a colorful shirt in a contrasting print
    fabric or a t-shirt for casual wear. The pagne is also used to carry babies
    on their back or wrapped around their head for coverage. Draw a picture
    of the clothing, dress up in a Ivory Coast themed costumes, create an
    accessory or pagne, complete our paperdolls OR view traditional clothing
    through books or the internet or our country manual.

    12. There are a variety of games that played in Ivory
    Coast by children. Learn a traditional game OR play a game that symbolizes
    Ivory Coast OR play a water game.
