Focal
point coming into the event: Using poster board, several
pieces taped together, creating an arch walk through. Trim
the top to create an arch at the top. Cover the poster board
with stars, rope, and maybe hay. Attach it around the doorway
with packing tape. {You may want to create it in two separate
pieces so you can transport it to your event.}
For
extra, you can cut out various "Western" themed
items from poster board (cowboy hats, cowboy boots, horses,
sheriff's badge, etc.) or have hay bales (you can purchase
these at craft stores) and place it on the bottom of the arch.
Attire:
For this event you can wear jeans, a "cowgirl" skirt,
plaid/flannel/button-up shirt, leather belt, boots, cowboy/straw
hat, bandana(s) and/or a sheriff's badge. For extra, you can
wear tassels or fringe on your shirt/jacket.
Decorations
inside the facility: Decorations could include participants
decorating a star, horse, cowboy boot or hat, wanted posters,
or hay bale. You can create them out of construction paper
and/or poster board. Each group could receive a pattern for
the decoration. Collect the decorations at the next meeting
before the dance. Before the guests arrive tape them on the
wall behind the tables. Personal touch yet very festive. Cuts
down on cost for the event as well.
Refreshments:
Festive tablecloths in bright colors, plaid/flannel "blanket"
material, faux leather, or any western colors should be used
to cover the table. These can be covered with clear plastic
tablecloth covers. Place a plastic basket of potato chips
(put in individual bags or buy individual bags), peanuts (be
aware of allergies!), do-si-do® cookies (contain peanut butter!),
oatmeal cookies, oatmeal creme pies®, hershey kisses®, pretzels,
and/or candies on each table with a bandana lined bowl. Water
bottles can be placed on each table and you can stick western
themed stickers on them. Use a piece of cardstock folded over
to place on each table with the name of the group.
Extra:
Take photos of each group or if it is a parent/daughter event
take pictures of couples. A backdrop could be a black sheet
with stars attached to it. You can also stamp western theme
items on on the fabric as well or stencil the lettering "Western
Hoedown" on the backdrop. You could also have an some
items listed above from here (wanted posters) or have the
child hold a horse on a stick or a lasso. Child sits on stool
and parent stands or they can both sit on hay bales.
